Full Review Eden Eternal ReviewBy April BethkeEden Eternal is a fantasy MMORPG that was originally developed and released in Taiwan on October 28, 2010 by X-Legend. It was later published internationally by Aeria games on June 15, 2011. The game was released under the name Finding Neverland Online in China and Eternal Atlas in Japan. The game features rich environments, diverse races, and numerous features.
Visually speaking, the cute anime-inspired graphics are similar to titles like Aura Kingdom,. Character Creation and Starting OutThe character creation in Eden Eternal is some of the best I’ve seen. There are numerous options for hair style, hair color, skin color, and eyes. There’s even an option to try out different clothes and emotions.
It’s a nice customization system that makes me feel like I can really design a unique custom character that fits my tastes. X-Legend obviously put a lot of effort into the character creation system, and it definitely shows. The story begins when the player wakes up in a village with no memory. Supposedly the character is some important being that can save the world. While the plot line is overdone, I found that Eden Eternal had a unique take on storytelling that can potentially make up for the overdone storyline. Through quests, the story of the player's character is told in the interesting format of a book, meaning it reads less like a game and more like an extremely interactive novel. Most players will likely skip past the story, but it’s there for players who might enjoy it. Players who read through the story may find this change great, but others who don’t enjoy novel-like formats and prefer the normal MMO story format may not like this change so much.
After creating a character and logging in, the tutorial begins. The weird thing about Eden Eternal’s tutorial is that I hardly even noticed it was a tutorial because of how well it blended in with the rest of the game.
It has you bouncing between NPCs often, but luckily just clicking on an NPC's name in the quest tracker will take you there automatically. Thankfully, the tutorial wasn’t that bad or long, and the rest of the game felt well-paced.After the tutorial is over, players get the chance to freely explore the world of Eden Eternal. Like most MMORPGs, the game play is mostly linear.
Quests will take you across the land, with experience gain being well paced, not too fast or too slow. Through the quests, players will experience the wonderful gameplay of Eden Eternal, using the well polished menu system to take and complete quests, change armor, and look at skills. It's worth mentioning that finding specific monsters to kill for a quest is made easy in Eden Eternal.
Simply click on the monster's name in the quest-track and bam! Your character is automatically on its way to that enemy's location. Players don't have to quest alone in Eden Eternal. Pet companions are available, which can be trained to heal or attack upon reaching Level 25.
Unique Class SystemThe most interesting feature of Eden Eternal is its unique deviation from the normal class system present in most MMORPGs. Normally, at the start of an MMO, the player creates a character and gives that character a class. Warrior, Mage, Cleric – whatever players pick will be what class they are the entire game, or until they upgrade to a better version of that class later on through a job change.
However, in Eden Eternal, players choose a starting class, but they aren’t limited to that class alone. Classes are unlocked through leveling up or by reaching a specific certain level with another class. Players can freely switch between any class they have unlocked. While gaining regular experience, players also gain job experience to level up their classes. This is needed, because all new classes that are unlocked start at level one. At the start of the game, several classes are unlocked, meaning players can change classes as soon as they see fit.
There are 20+ classes in total, all with their very own requirements to be unlocked. Some classes are simple, like the Cleric, whose only requirement is for your character to be Level 5; some are more complex, like the Ranger whose requirements are for the character to be Level 65, the Martial Artist class to be Level 60, and for the Hunter to be Level 60. This feature greatly adds to the gameplay, and stops the game from being boring and repetitive. Now instead of just grinding one class to max level, players can grind 20+ different classes to max level! All on one character, too! Switching between classes is a breeze and leveling through each one doesn't feel like a chore, either. To unlock more advanced classes, players do need to level up multiple classes at once. To unlock the Martial Artist class for example, players need a base level of 40 and Thief Level 35.
A Samurai, on the other hand, requires a base level of 60, Warrior Level 55, and Martial Artist Level 55. Eden Eternal doesn't get stale because players are constantly working to unlock more advanced classes.
Having played countless MMORPGs, I can say without a doubt that the class system in Eden Eternal is both unique and fantastic. Character Emotions & Social FeaturesLike other MMORPGs, Eden Eternal has an emotion system. Players get the option of selecting various emotions and actions for their character to express. Players can choose to express anger, regret, they can laugh, sit, bow, wave, cheer, point, and even collapse on the ground. There are even three types of dances players can make their character do.
This is usually not worth mentioning in a review, but I found the dances and emotes in Eden Eternal to be much more varied compared to other MMORPGs. While these emotes serve little to no purpose for the overall game, it was interesting and fun to make my character dance and show emotions. The emotions option really added a great feeling to the game, especially since most MMO’s barely give players a fraction of these options. How many other games let you dance the Caramelldansen dance?Like Fiesta Online and Asda Story, Eden Eternal features a soulmate system. Players can form relationships with anyone in the game world (including same-sex soulmates). The dating system is completely free and has its benefits. Couples receive special lover skills like, 'Soulmate Instant Heal' while they're together and other combat bonuses when fighting together.
Heroic TraitsAnother unique aspect of Eden Eternal is the game's ‘Heroic Trait’ choice when creating a character. Heroic traits are traits players can choose when creating a character.
Each one of the traits permanently increases certain in-game stats. The trait options are Leadership, Guardian, Apostle, Commando, Sanctum, Maverick, Adventurer, and Crackshot. Some traits are more beneficial to certain classes than others, so if you really want to play a specific late-game class, try to pick a trait that most benefits that class. Become FamousPlayers become famous by completing quests. For any given town or faction, doing quests will make players fame rise in that community. This is not only interesting, but very rewarding. Once players have received enough fame points for a faction, they’re granted access to special items from that faction’s vendors.
There are four different types of fame: regional, general, special, and guild.Regional fame is gathered by completing NPC quests in a certain zone. These points can only be used in the region they were obtained, and the rewards mostly consist of equipment.
The purchasing locations can be found behind the village leaders/chiefs in the form of a treasure chest. General fame is received by turning in quest items to a specific NPC in Aven, the capital city of the central continent.
Typical rewards that can be purchased with these fame points are weapons, quest books, and armor. There are nine factions in Aven in which players can turn in quest items, and three types of NPCs in each faction. There are NPCs that sell high quality items to the player, NPCs that require monster drops, and NPCs that require farm, mine, or altar summoning items.Special fame is received by completing book quests for the Curia Libray, or through battlefield participation.Guild fame increases a guild's level and is received by guild members completing guild quests.
Guild members can purchase scrolls from the bulletin board inside the guild town or from the guild officer in Aven. Amazing Guild SystemThe guild system in Eden Eternal is the best I’ve seen, with an interesting twist on the usual guild system. Upon reaching Level 20 and having 50 gold, players can create their own guild. Players can organize ranks for their members, giving each rank different privileges within the guild. Guilds can have their own custom guild logo that can be uploaded from the player's computer, which allows players to customize their logo to fit their play style and interests. I'm surprised every other game doesn't do this.
Having your own custom guild logo is a neat feature that gives guilds their own unique identity. Players who make their own guild get their own in-game message board and their own system chat, which makes it easy to reach out to your guild members.Possibly the most interesting part of the guild system in Eden Eternal is the possibility for a guild to get their own town, called an eden. Guilds with over 30 members get the privilege of getting their own town to act as their home base.
Setting up a guild town doesn’t come cheap. It costs 500g to purchase and if there are already 50 guild towns on the server this costs increases to 10,000g. Inactive guilds end up losing their towns, so it is possible to pay the smaller 500g price to buy an eden even on busy servers. Guild towns are in their own instanced zones and have a shared warehouse where members can keep guild items.
Guilds can also construct various structures inside their eden, such as farms, mines, altars, alchemy labs, and magic ponds which all benefit the guild. These buildings directly benefit guild members.
For example, the Foundry can be used to craft weapons while the Mine can be used by players to excavate ore. Final Verdict – ExcellentEden Eternal is an extremely interesting game. From the unique guild systems, to the amazing character customization options, the great features of Eden Eternal more than make up for it’s downfalls. While the storyline may be overused and cliche, I feel this game deserves a great 5/5 stars for its entertaining features and engaging gameplay. For players who adore great scenery, guilds, and customization, Eden Eternal could possibly be a great game for them to play, while others who prefer unique storylines may feel dissatisfied.
